Presentation to The Waggon and Horses pub in Hartley Wintney

2014_4455_Waggon_and_Horses_5_Jul_017The first ever Co-ALE-ition signed and framed certificate (designed by Chinners) was presented to Niall Scott (Landlord of the Waggon and Horses pub in Hartley Wintney) on Saturday 5th July 2014. This presentation was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday 3rd July when we went to the Waggon and Horses as part of the launch of Monsters In The Dark, but Niall was not available he had gone to bed early so we left a message for Niall with Phil the barman “UKIP, whilst the Loony’s drink Monsters In The Dark”.
The presentation took place at The Waggon and Horses in front of lots of Niall’s customers and friends and marked the achievement of the Waggon and Horses becoming the first pub to sell 5 different Co-ALE-ition ales i.e. Longdog’s Winning Co-ALE-ition (recently sold in The Strangers Bar at the Houses of Parliament), Ascot Ales’ Hope & Glory, Wild Weather’s HowlinGale, Mash brewery’s Monster Mash and Ascot Ales’ Monsters In The Dark have all featured at the Waggon and Horses so only Langham’s Co-ALE-tion Gold is left now to complete the full set.
Niall was clearly overwhelmed but very pleased, he had tears in his eyes as he made space on the wall of the main bar in the Waggon and Horses to hang up his latest accolade. Lots of people were taking photos on their cameras and it was a great occasion.
Niall Scott has been one of the greatest supporters of Co-ALE-ition ales, the Waggon and Horses has been in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for many years and in 2013 was voted Pub of the Year by CAMRA’s North Hants branch.

Monsters In The Dark, launched across three different counties

2014_4441_Monsters_In_The_Dark_Launch_3_Jul_010Monsters In The Dark 5% Exile Stout is the 8th different Co-ALE-ition ale to be officially launched by the OMRLP and was brewed by Chris Gill of the Ascot Ales brewery located in Camberley (Surrey). Monsters In The Dark is a rebranded version of the multi award winning ” Anastasias Exile Stout ” which is a superb tasting high quality dark ale with an abv of 5%. Anastasias Exile Stout was voted by CAMRA as the best stout in London and the SE for both 2012/13 and 2013/14 and in Feb 2014 was voted, again by CAMRA, as the second best Stout in the whole of the UK for 2014. Monsters In The Dark is now our only Co-ALE-ition Stout offering and has replaced Milk Street brewery’s Co-ALE-ition Dark 2014_4443_Monsters_In_The_Dark_Launch_3_Jul_016Side Stout which has struggled to make any sales impact despite lots of advertising, marketing and promotion by Alan Hope and Derrill Carr. Chris Gill was pleased to inform us that Monsters In The Dark had already been ordered/delivered to 8 different pubs prior to this launch event which is another remarkable first for a Co-ALE-ition ale.

The Monsters In The Dark pumpclip is again unique and very eye-catching and features a group photo of Alan Hope together with the five members of the OMRLP Cabinet. The name ” Monsters in The Dark ” was specifically chosen for this latest Co-ALE-ition ale to reflect that this is a dark ale and also to remind everyone that the OMRLP continue to do their own thing and wish to remain completely ” in the dark ” regarding the political point scoring and negative responses which are a feature of all the main, is it 3 or 4, political parties these days.

2014_4444_Monsters_In_The_Dark_Launch_3_Jul_020The official launch commenced at the Ascot Ales brewery in Camberley (Surrey) at 6pm. Chris Gill (Ascot Ales brewery owner/head brewer) was there as host and welcomed everybody. Two different Co-ALE-ition ales were available straight from the cask i.e. Monsters In the Dark Exile Stout and the very successful Co-ALE-ition Hope & Glory Single Hop IPA. Alan Hope officially launched Monsters In The Dark with Chris Gill, supported by two of his Cabinet members i.e. The Baron who had travelled from West Sussex and Chinners who had travelled from Surbiton i.e. 3 out of the 6 officials of the OMRLP pictured on the pumpclip were in attendance for this launch event. In addition Kevin Travers and Val Helliwell who are both Committee members of the CAMRA Surrey Hants and Borders branch, were all also in attendance as was Johnny from Farnham who was videoing the whole event for Howling. There were 14 people in total at the brewery with more people promising to join in as we made our way around the three different counties (Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire).

2014_4445_Monsters_In_The_Dark_Launch_3_Jul_027We thanked Chris Gill for hosting the brewery launch and for also ensuring Monsters In The Dark would be available at all three pubs we were visiting that night. All three of these pubs were in the latest (2014) CAMRA Good Beer Guide. We then went to the Rose and Crown in Sandhurst (Berkshire) arriving at 7.15, where Peter Cozens, the Landlord, had put on Monsters In The Dark on handpump especially for our visit. The Rose and Crown is the CAMRA SE Berks Branch pub of the year for 2014. We were also joined there by Quinton Drake, the local CAMRA Champion with a passion for promoting dark ales. Transport was arranged for everybody but Kevin and Val cycled around the venues and arrived before us in most cases!!. We set ourselves up in the beer garden in the Rose and Crown on a beautiful summer’s night and enjoyed a perfect pint of Monsters In The Dark. In no time at all Howling had got lots of people drinking Monsters In The Dark and the feedback was very positive. We were well looked after by Michelle, Peter’s wife.

2014_4448_Monsters_In_The_Dark_Launch_3_Jul_034We then made our way to the Golden Pot in the village of Eversley (Hampshire) arriving just after 8pm where Gary Pope the new Landlord had put on Monsters In The Dark on handpump especially for our visit. Once again we enjoyed a perfect pint of Monsters In The Dark in a beautiful chocolate box country pub setting. We were really impressed also by the wonderful smell of the food coming out of the kitchen. Mark, behind the bar, looked after us very well and Howling soon got talking to several of the regulars and in no time at all had them drinking Monsters In The Dark. Chinners did a great job at all four of the brewery/pub venues we visited distributing Monsters In the Dark metal badges, bang up to date Co-ALE-ition leaflets and the OMRLP’s detailed manifesto for 2064 i.e OMRLP are now the.only political party with fully committed long term promises to be delivered in 50 years time. As we left the Golden Pot we made our apologies to the diners who responded by saying ” you have made our night and we are sorry to see you leave.”

2014_4449_Monsters_In_The_Dark_Launch_3_Jul_037We then made our way to the Waggon and Horses in Hartley Wintney (Hampshire) and got there just after 9pm. Neil (Niall) Scott had ensured Monsters In The Dark was available this time straight from the cask and once again it was served in superb condition in this highly regarded village pub. The Waggons and Horses is the CAMRA North Hants Branch pub of the year for 2013. Howling planned to do a special presentation of a signed framed certificate (designed by Chinners) to Neil the Landlord to commemorate the Waggon and Horses in becoming the first pub to sell five different Co-ALE-ition ales. Unfortunately this presentation could not take place whilst we were there as Neil, the Landlord, had apparently gone to bed at 8pm, rumours were going round the pub that he had been sampling/drinking Monsters In The Dark during the afternoon!!  Phil behind the bar looked after us very well. Martin Hannah (Lord Pilcot of Dogmersfield) joined us in the Waggon and Horses and came along to the Indian restaurant as well.
We said our goodbyes to Kevin and Val who were cycling back home as we left the Waggon and Horses at 10pm for the short journey to the Hook Tandoori in Hook (Hampshire).

2014_4450_Monsters_In_The_Dark_Launch_3_Jul_042We arrived at the Hook Tandoori at 10.15 and were given a very warm welcome for what we expected was going to be a memorable Indian meal in this highly rated Indian restaurant. We had a table booked for the 10 of us who were eating which was perfect plus Chinners stayed for the group photos and then made his way via the Raven Hotel (directly across the road from the Hook Tandoori) to reminisce over previous OMRLP conferences which had taken place at this same venue) before catching the London bound train at the nearby Hook station back to his home in Surbiton. Howling was in demand with the local customers for photos and one customer in particular knew a lot about the OMRLP and connected very well with Howling. Martin Hannah (Lord Pilcot of Dogmersfield) entertained the group with his get out of jail story, unfortunately the same punch line was repeated many times over!!. The Baron, and his father Norman, introduced us to a non alcoholic Indian drink called Lassi which proved to be very popular on the night. The quality of the food and service was exceptional (best curry I have had for many years was a comment from Leon Slater). We were given a choice of a complimentary port or baileys from our appreciative hosts and left the Indian restaurant at 12.20am ensuring everybody had a lift back home, thanks again to Joy, Derrill, Baron and Johnny who provided the transport by car for everybody throughout the whole evening.

Rochester Castle, The Crosse Keys & The Pommelers Rest

2014_4404_Strangers_Bar_and_London_pubs_25_Jun_120After the wonderful reception at the House of Parliament, we knew we had our day cut out. Arrangements had been made with Chris Gill one our Co-ALE-ition brewers and Derrill Carr, the brains exraordinaire behind the whole project, to visit three J. D.Wetherspoon outlets in London.
The first being ‘The Rochester Castle’ in Stoke Newington, Knigel Knapp led the way cause it was his local, he knew where to go. So we hot footed it down tube stations, on buses and finally got there at 4 o’clock, where they had ‘Monsters in the Dark’ and ‘Hope and Glory’ on hand pump, we were treated by Angela the landlady to sample our own beer, which of course we accepted! We also met some of the North London Loony contingent, notably ‘Stanley Bad’ who plays guitar, and will be joining the ‘Big Fibbers’ at our conference in Wales later this the year!
2014_4406_Strangers_Bar_and_London_pubs_25_Jun_131Then we made our way back into Central London to a Wetherspoon flagship outlet called ‘The Crosse Keys’ they also had  ‘Monsters’ and ‘Hope’ on, the bar staff were impeccable, and very pleased to see us, invited us behind the bar for photo’s, under instruction from the management, “don’t you dare miss this opportunity” was the order of the day. It was also very pleasing to see their Electric Tariff board with both our Co-ALE-ition brews, sticking out like a thirsty tongue!

2014_4408_Strangers_Bar_and_London_pubs_25_Jun_151Off we went again, by underground train, to Tower Bridge, after a leisurely stroll across the bridge, on a nice hot day, we were only too pleased to finally come upon our third stop ‘The Pommelers Rest’, actually in Bermondsey, which of course was the place in history where the Official Monster Raving Loony Party first stood under that name in 1983, our illustrious leader ‘Screaming Lord Sutch’ was the first ever candidate, he was well remembered! Once again we were welcomed with open arms, like long lost friends, it had been advertised that we would be there, I don’t know if the beer, once again ‘Monsters’ and ‘Hope’ tasted better, or if it was that we were just thirstier, but once again thanks to the management (we weren’t left short)!
2014_4402_Strangers_Bar_and_London_pubs_25_Jun_077We would also like to thank Henry, Portia and Rob, from Deuce Films, for following us around and showing an interest in putting a Loony Party documentary together, they haven’t finished yet, they will be at the conference .
All in all a wonderful time was had by all, Leon Slater, Steve and Joy Lawson, Loony Party sympathisers, who have been to all the Brewery Launches, were invited to be our honoured guests for the day, thanking them for their support!
There was just one down side to the day, Derrill Carr, who had worked so hard on our behalf, arranging and co-ordinating, was unable to be with us, he was so looking forward to it, but went down with a serious bout of flu.
Happily to report that he seems to be OK now, but such a shame, we missed him!
Howling ‘Laud’ Hope
Party Leader.

Howling and a few of his loyal supporters plus Knigel ” Big Fibber ” Knapp and Lisa Robins representing the Longdog brewery were invited to the Houses of Parliament on Wednesday 25 June to officially launch Longdog’s Winning Co-ALE-ition in The Strangers Bar.
The party arrived at the Houses of Parliament around midday and were met by Rollo Hope (no relation to Howling) at 12.30 who escorted the group to The Strangers Bar. Straight after Prime Minsters’ Questions (PMQs) they were then joined by their joint hosts

Sir Gerald Howarth (Conservative MP for Aldershot and Rushmoor District) and Maria Miller (Conservative MP for Basingstoke and former Coalition Govt Minister for Culture), plus James Arbuthnot (Conservative MP for Fleet and NE Hampshire) and Simon Hughes (Lib Dems MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark and currently the Coalition Govt Minister for Justice).
Back in Feb 1983, when the Loony Party first fielded a candidate at an election, it was Screaming Lord David Sutch who took on Simon Hughes in the Bermondsey by-election.

Simon Hughes won this by-election and was elected as an MP for the first time in 1983 and has been the Bermondsey MP ever since. We have invited Simon several times to Co-ALE-ition launch events to celebrate 30 years of the OMRLP and his own 30 year term as the Bermondsey MP and we were especially delighted he accepted our invitation to join us in The Strangers Bar for this very special launch of Winning Co-ALE-ition which was first luanched in Sept 2013 to celebrate 30 years since the OMRLP first stood at an election.
All four MPs were drinking Winning Co-Ale-ition and the ale was on fine form and served in excellent condition by Will the barman. Will also confirmed that Winning Co-ALE-ition had been on sale since Monday and was very popular and he expected all 5 casks to be sold in less than a week.

Winning Co-ALE-ition is the only ale brewed for a political party to appear in a bar in the Houses of Parliament and yet another first for the OMRLP.
It was amazing for Howling to see himself portrayed on the Winning Co-ALE-ition pumpclip in The Strangers Bar with his hand held up high by David Cameron (photo was taken at the Witney General Election count in May 2010) knowing that this would be visible to lots of MPs from all parties and would really put the Loony Party on the map.

Howling’s party, together with their MP guests, then moved onto the outside terrace of The Strangers Bar for the afternoon where they were able to soak up the sun drinking Co-ALE-ition looking out over a magnificent panorama featuring the River Thames and Westminster Bridge. They were a truly privileged group of people and as they left the Houses of Parliament they noticed that the direction sign for the House of Lords had been changed to the “House of Lauds”

HOPEfully signalling that Howling will soon take his well deserved place in the second chamber!

Co-ALE-ition is no stranger to MPs

2013_CoaleitionFive casks of Longdog’s Winning Co-ALE-ition (pumpclip attached above)were delivered to the wholesaler last week and will be delivered by them to The Strangers Bar this week, complete with the Co-ALE-ition pumpclips.
Here is the provisional itinerary for this very special day (Wed 25th June 2014):-
The Strangers Bar at The Houses of Parliament – we will be met by Rollo (Sir Gerald Howarth’s PA) about 12.30 no ID is required but we need to allow say 15 mins to get through security. Dress code is smart casual, but gents must wear a jacket and a tie (Alan’s white suit and bow tie fully meets these requirements).
Rollo will then escort us straight to The Strangers Bar where we will meet up with Sir Gerald Howarth straight after Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs) have finished at 12.30. We are hopeful that David Cameron will also pop into The Strangers Bar for a pint of Co-ALE-ition and another chance to lift up Howling’s arm to acknowledge the OMRLP’s latest triumph in successfully producing their own range of ales. Phil and Lisa Robins (Longdog owners/head brewer) will also be there with us but escorted by their local MP Maria Miller.
Borough Market (open from 10 till 5pm on a Wed) fantastic fresh food to suit every taste and very good value as well, we could go there for an early lunch around 11am or after The Strangers Bar visit and also visit the world famous Market Porter pub. We could also get up and close to The Shard Building which is just over the road from Borough Market.
Sit in the public gallery in the House of Commons and listen to the debates — the MPs are sitting from 2.30pm on Wed and it is free entry.

Other pubs in London who have already confirmed they will be selling Co-ALE-ition ales on Wed 25th June are as follows:-

I will update this information when I hear back from Alan Hope about The Strangers Bar final arrangements after Sir Gerald Howarth leaves us at 1pm and in addition there may also be some further Co-ALE-ition pub options after Chris Gill (Ascot Ales) has completed his deliveries in London this Thursday.
The News & Mail and the Basingstoke Gazette are both covering this ” Co-ALE-ition enters The Strangers Bar”  story so I will be providing them each with different photos, an outline of the story and and lots of other information. Howling may have got a national newspaper on board by then plus TV as well.
Howling is in charge of all the arrangements for the Houses of Parliament, House of Commons and The Strangers Bar key parts of the visit including getting guest tickets which by their very nature are limited in number – don’t just turn up on the day please give Howling a call on 07946 292557 to check availability. However if anybody wants to join us for any other part of this momentous day e.g. at the three pubs, Borough Market and at a highly rated Indian restaurant, let Derrill know either by email (derrill.carr@btinternet.com) or you can give him a call on 07803 292557.

Attached below is some further information about our Monsters In The Dark Exile Stout together with the tasting notes.
“Monsters In the Dark Exile Stout” brewed by Ascot Ales
This is our latest Co-ALE-tion ale (No 8 and still counting) and is an Exile Stout with a 5% abv. Monsters In The Dark is a Co-ALE-ition rebranded version of Anastasias Exile Stout which as well as being a multi award winning ale over several years was also voted by CAMRA as the best stout in the whole of London and the SE for 2013/2014. Anastasias Exile Stout was also awarded the Silver Medal in CAMRA’s 2014 Champion Winter Beer of Britain competition which was announced at the Winter Ale Festival held in Derby during February earlier this year. So a real coup for Co-ALE-ition and especially for the Monster Raving Loony Party who can now offer the best stout in London and the SE to the ever growing number of Co-ALE-ition drinkers which is also rated by CAMRA as the second best stout in the whole of the UK.
Tasting notes — Monsters In The Dark Exile Stout is packed full of chocolate and roasted coffee flavours with a slight sherry tasting aroma and is further bittered to balance the sweetness of the malts. This exile stout has a unique hoppy aroma with noticeable orange and pine flavours flowing through to a silky smooth finish.
The pumpclip features the eye catching photo of Alan Hope with his OMRLP Cabinet and they are monsters in the dark as they continue to ignore political protocol and operate as a Party in exactly the same way as they have always done over the last 30 years – what you see is never what you get with the Loony Party there is always an X-Factor which no doubt you will witness first hand if you come to any of these launch events on 3rd July.

Hope & Glory is now a World Cup ale

Ascot_Hope_GloryAscot Ales Co-ALE-ition Hope & Glory has now been adopted by Howling’s local pub, The Prince Arthur in Fleet, as their World Cup ale offering. This ale will be available at the Prince Arthur for the next month and sales should go through the roof at all the England games if our ” Land of Hope and Glory ” boys progress to the later stages of the competition. Other pubs are now following the Prince Arthur’s lead and Chris Gill (Ascot Ales owner and head brewer) is now actively marketing and promoting Hope & Glory as a World Cup ale.

HowlinGale – the winning mild

2014_2801_Prince_Arthur_Mild nightHowling hosted a special Mild Month of May night at the Prince Arthur in Fleet yesterday (Wednesday). Six Milds from all over the UK were available on the night including our own Co-ALE-ition Mild — HowlinGale from the Wild Weather brewery. A competition was arranged to enable customers to vote for the best Mild on the night after being given free samples of all the six Milds available. 2014_2802_Prince_Arthur_Mild nightMore than 30 customers took part in the competition and the winning Mild was HowlinGale from Wild Weather which received 50% of the total votes.
Mike Tempest from Wild Weather also attended and ran a ” Meet The Brewer ” session which went down very well especially with the 20+ members of the local CAMRA branch who were there.
Several Ale Festival organisers were there and we confidently expect HowlinGale orders from the Fleet Lions and Woking Ale Festivals.
